If anybody saw the documentary entitled Pedigree Dogs Exposed, then you will know what I am talking about.
The Kennel Club is bad. End of. Point not finished - I shall now have to rant about a few breeds that have been very badly affected.
In my opinion, the best breed of dog in the world is the Cavilier King Charles Spaniel - they are gorgeous, clever, loyal, loving and have and excellent temperment.
I had one four years ago, called Barney. He was wonderful - worth twice his weight in gold, the last pup in the litter because he was fairly energetic and that put people of, but we took him. He loved to play and run around, and that made it even worse when he got a heart murmur.
We had to have him put to sleep in the end because he was in so much pain. He hadn't slept in days because he couldn't lie down and was falling asleep where he stood - it was the only thing we could do for him.
It broke my heart to see him like that because he'd given us so much happiness and we couldn't do anything to make him happier now.
If that's not bad enough, then there's that devastating condition known as syringomyelia - it's where the skull is too small to accommodate the brain, causing agony.
Some humans have this condition, and they say it is like someone drilling into your skull with one of those huge road drill thingies, 24/7.
Why? Because of the Kennel Club's stupid breed and show standards that these money-grabbing breeders are so eager to conform to. They've set down that the Cavs are supposed to have tiny skulls and short noses which cause this condition.
A few years back, a Cav with Syringomyelia won Best in Breed at Crufts. What does that say about the importance of the health and happiness of the dogs?
The woman on the Doc mentioned above spoke out because she heard about a breeder, a prolific member of the Cavilier Club UK, who had bred upwards of 20 litters from a dog with Syringomyelia. That's over 40 pups who have the potential to either develop or pass on this agonising condition, passed on by a dog who had been closly bred with his own family.
The Cavilier Club UK held an emergency meeting.
It's subject?
Whether to expel of of it's members?
Which member?
Maragaret Carter - the woman who decided that enough was enough - she wasn't going to let the disgraceful conditions of the breed she loves to go unnoticed and uncared about any longer. The member who bred so many pups from such an ill dog, however, got off scot-free and is still a respected member within the club.
The video of the Cav writhing around on the floor in agony due to it's condition had me in tears.
So, what's the message from the Kennel Club and it's branches?
Hey! Our dogs look pretty! Who gives a stuff about their health and happiness? They sure look good! And who cares that our standards and inbreeding have allowed the development of such terrible temperments? The dogs look good, that's all that matters!
Cavs are a breed on the edge of extinction.
German Shepards are in a terrible state
More and more "Dangerous Dog" attacks are being reported - and they've been bred that way by the breed and show standards set by the agency that is supposed to protect and care for it's dogs.
In my opinion, the Kennel Club needs to be taught a lesson.
I'm very glad that the RSPCA and Dogs Trust have pulled out of Crufts and Discover Dogs (That shows that these agencies truly care) and I hope that the BBC follows their example instead of worrying so much about the Brand and Ross episode.
What's the difference between human and animal?
Animals can't talk, therefore they can't stand up for themselves, and we see this as our right to treat them horribly.
I'm not a vegatarian or anything (If I was I'd die - I'm that fussy), but I have boundaries, and a lot of dogs are very very intelligent. Give them a voice and opposable thumbs and they'd be the same (if not better - they wouldn't be so cruel) as us.
While Pedigree Dogs Exposed has been accused of being Biased to the extreme, it nevertheless gave us all a shocking wake up call - the videos on it were real enough, weren't they?
And isn't that enough to persuade us that something has to be done?
BEWARE - Contains very distressing scenes. Do not watch if you upset easily - the videos are very upsetting
