This is a mainly Independent film, directed and written by Duncan Jones (son of David Bowie) and it plays homage to the sci fi films of the 70's, mainly Alien. I saw this last weekend, and along with a small cinema full of 40-60 year olds, loved every minute of it. It's slow, complex and emotionally attatching, so it's brilliant. This is more for the real film lover mind, not for those looking for excessive amounts of violence/special effects. The acting was done, mostly by Sam Rockwell, playing two versions of the same character, with support from Kevin Spacey as the voice of his helpful robot assistant GERTY, but apart from that, there's about 3 or 4 actors that have no more than a couple of minutes of screen time.
The Plot: In the not too distant future, Sam Bell is an astronaut, living in the Sarang base on the Moon (hence the title.) He is working for a big corporation, mining for a gas known as Helium 3, which, in the future, will provide more than 70% of the worlds power. One day, after an accident when travelling to one of the diggers in his rover, Sam begins to see another, younger, less desperate version of himself. Just 2 weeks away from the end of his 3 year contract, Sam is about to be going home, or is he? Who is this strange 'other' Sam? - and what is his purpose? Only one way to find out...
Moon is Duncan Jones debut picture, and it's absolutely amazing. Easily the best film I've seen all year, just don't fall asleep!
