Well I'm thinking of getting into graphic design, and I'm wondering what is the point of buying an expensive software like Photoshop when there is an Open Source alternative out there called Gimp (GNU Image Manipulation Program).
So what do you think, is Photoshop worth the extra cost?

There's an even easier program called Paint.NET which I find is better.

There's no alternative to Photoshop for serious work. If you want to mess around with some preset filters, and do some very basic edits paint.NET is fine, GIMP is a bit more advanced, and capable of good results if you learn how to use it. But, with Photoshop you're getting an awful lot more.
However, if you just want to start out, get GIMP, since that teaches you all the basics.

Actually it looks like you can do anything with GIMP that you can with photoshop HOWEVER it takes far much more work to get to that point, and isn't made to do the same things either.
However the basics are an important starting point and GIMP is extremely easy to understand - certainly it's worth using GIMP first, and then if you find that you're getting to the point where Photoshop would be easier then switching to that. I've found the more I use GIMP the more I prefer it to photoshop.

If you have Photoshop at your disposal, please use it.

But if not, it's a ridiculous amount of money to spend on one piece of software.

Most people don't actually buy it...

Well the earlier versions are cheaper too, I remember using the version before CS. But I think at that point you may as well use GIMP instead.

I use photoshop elements, its not got everything the full photoshop has obviously, but is a lot cheaper, and produces very good results. I can't really comment on GIMP, because 've never used it...
