Heard this debate on Kerrang last night. I found it quite interesting. Basically, the argument put forward was that Religion doesn't exist because the 'holy books' have been interpreted in many different ways, and are then also interpreted by you, so there is no REAL group as every-one has interpreted religion differently, and therefore no one person believes the same thing. Discuss.

Even if everyone has their own unique religion, that doesn't not mean religion doesn't exist. How did he even come to that conclusion? Religion is just the set of beliefs you have about god(s), the beginning of the universe, morality, the purpose of human life on earth, and things like that. Just because we don't all agree with one another, doesn't mean those beliefs stop existing. If every person in the world had a different religion than there would be billions of religions in the world, but that wouldn't mean there wasn't a religion.
The only way you could use that argument at all would be if you were saying that ORGANIZED religion didn't exist because organized religion only happens when a group of people sit together and all agree with one another about a set of beliefs, but even then . . . . .
Everyone may not agree about every little issue about life or religion, but there's a certain amount of the religion you have to believe and agree with to belong to that religion.
You have to believe Jesus died on the cross for your sins to be a Christian for example. If you don't believe that, you're not a Christian anymore. Christians disagree about a lot of things, but we ALL agree about that one thing (and a few other things, but I'm not going to get into that right now), so we are all still organized even if we aren't all being mindless robots who blindly follow everything our pastors say in unison.

Religion exists, for as long as there's at least one person in the world believing in it. It's become more flexible than it used to, and yes, I'm a Christian but there's certain aspects I disagree with. I believe Jesus died on the cross to save us, like all others, but I don't hold the church's stance on homosexuality, for example. And that's good, because religion is all about finding your own identity, not being sheep who follow blindly what they're led to do.
