I don't think charity is the answer. Oppressive 3rd world Governments need to loosen their strangle hold on business. De-regulate so that it is actually possible for trade to occur. Then the country will be able to develop, which ultimately is the only cure for poverty. I mean, the poverty struck here live as kings when compared to their African counterparts.
Good luck getting their governments to give up any of their control, though... it would require nothing short of a revolution.

If you read the fine print in most of the charity events like a raffle of a car, you find that the PROFTS go to charity, not the whole sum. So if you're raffling off a Porsche 911 and you've made 300,000 dollars, people look at that sum and go, "wow, what a great cause." but then you take out the cost of the 911 (250,000) and all you have is 1/6 of what you actually made, going to charity.
