Then read some of the thrillers by James Patterson, I don't mean Maximum Ride, I mean the adult books that he writes that are mystery/action genre.

At the library yesterday, I noticed the Wind Singer series by William Nicholson. When I read these books, I thought they were really good, although I can't remember exactly what it was like.
